North Korea has announced plans to deploy its newest and most advanced warship in mid-June following successful navigation and weapons evaluations supervised by leader Kim Jong Un.

According to North Korean state media, the newly built Choe Hyon-class destroyer recently completed a long-range maneuverability test in the West Sea, traveling approximately 120 nautical miles during the operation. The vessel is considered one of the country’s largest modern naval platforms and is believed to be designed to carry nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.

Kim Jong Un personally inspected the destroyer during the sea trial and reportedly discussed plans to accelerate naval modernization and strengthen military deterrence capabilities. Officials also reviewed the construction progress of additional destroyers currently under development.

Military analysts believe the deployment of the warship could significantly increase tensions in the region, particularly with South Korea, Japan, and the United States closely monitoring North Korea’s expanding naval and missile programs.

Focus on Advanced Weapons Production

In a separate military inspection, Kim Jong Un also visited defense manufacturing facilities involved in producing:

  • Cruise missile launch systems
  • Long-range artillery equipment
  • Modern battle tanks
  • Self-propelled gun-howitzer systems

State media reported that North Korea plans to deploy newly manufactured artillery systems near its southern border within this year.

The country also highlighted the development of tracked missile launcher vehicles designed for improved off-road mobility, allowing missile systems to operate from difficult terrain and remote launch areas.

Expansion of Naval Power

The Choe Hyon-class destroyer is viewed as part of North Korea’s broader military modernization strategy aimed at strengthening both conventional and strategic forces.

Reports suggest that North Korea is also preparing a new naval base capable of supporting large destroyers and advanced submarines on the country’s east coast. Construction work is expected to continue as the government pushes forward with long-term naval expansion plans.

Defense observers say the latest developments demonstrate Pyongyang’s increasing focus on enhancing its military technology despite ongoing international sanctions and regional security concerns.

The announcement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in East Asia, where military activity and defense cooperation among neighboring countries have intensified in recent months.
