2Pakistan's Digital Revolution Reaches a Milestone
In a historic achievement for the country's technology sector, Pakistan's IT and telecom exports have surpassed $4.1 billion in the financial year 2025–26 — a 38% increase over the previous year — marking the fastest growth in the sector's history. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a high-profile ceremony in Islamabad, attended by top government officials, tech entrepreneurs, and international investors.
Digital Pakistan Vision 2030 Unveiled
Alongside the export milestone, PM Shehbaz officially launched the Digital Pakistan Vision 2030 — a comprehensive national strategy aimed at transforming Pakistan into a regional technology hub. The roadmap outlines reaching $25 billion in annual IT exports by 2030, training 2 million tech professionals through the National Freelancing and AI Programme, establishing 10 Special Technology Zones (STZs) across Pakistan, providing high-speed broadband to 95% of the population by 2027, and launching a Pakistan AI National Council to govern and accelerate AI adoption across all sectors.
"This is not just a number — this is proof that Pakistan's youth, its engineers, and its entrepreneurs are ready to compete with the world." — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
Freelancers Lead the Charge
Pakistan currently ranks among the top 5 freelancing nations globally, with over 4.5 million active freelancers generating substantial foreign exchange. The government's Hunarmand Pakistan and DigiSkills programmes have collectively trained over 3 million individuals in digital skills over the past three years.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) also announced new simplified remittance rules for freelancers and IT companies, allowing faster and easier repatriation of foreign earnings — a move welcomed enthusiastically by the tech community.
Special Technology Zones: The Next Frontier
The Special Technology Zones Authority (STZA) confirmed that three new zones will break ground before December 2026 — in Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta — bringing world-class infrastructure, tax incentives, and incubation facilities to previously underserved regions.
"The STZs will create over 50,000 direct jobs and attract billions in foreign direct investment into Pakistan's digital economy." — Minister for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja
International Tech Giants Eye Pakistan
The ceremony also saw the signing of MoUs with three international technology companies — including a cloud infrastructure partnership and an AI research collaboration — signalling growing global confidence in Pakistan as an investment destination. Senior representatives from Google, Microsoft, and Oracle attended virtually, each expressing commitment to expanding their Pakistan operations.
Key Figures at a Glance
Pakistan's IT exports for FY 2025-26 reached $4.1 billion. The country currently has 4.5 million active freelancers. Ten Special Technology Zones are planned by 2030. The IT export target for 2030 is set at $25 billion. Broadband coverage is targeted at 95% of the population by 2027.
A New Chapter for Pakistan's Economy
Analysts and economists have called this a pivotal turning point for Pakistan's economy — one that demonstrates the country's capacity to diversify beyond traditional sectors and stake its claim in the global knowledge economy. With a young, tech-savvy population of over 130 million under the age of 30, Pakistan's digital future has never looked brighter. Pakistan is no longer just a consumer of technology — it is fast becoming a creator, an exporter, and a global digital powerhouse.
